Biography

Lorenzo Kamel is Associate Professor of Global History and History of the Middle East and North Africa at the University of Turin. He was the scientific director of New-Med, IAI scientific coordinator of the Horizon2020 MENARA project and series editor of Global Politics and Security (published by Peter Lang). He holds a two-years M.A. in Israel Studies from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, a Ph.D. in History from the University of Bologna, and was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University’s Center for Middle Eastern Studies (CMES) for two years, and a Marie Curie Experienced Researcher at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg. He held lessons and courses in many universities – including the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg, the University of Bologna, and Harvard University – and lived many years in several countries in the Middle East, spending also extensive periods as a Visiting Fellow in Palestine (Birzeit University), Egypt ('Ain Shams University), Israel (Hebrew University), Turkey (Bilkent University).
He published 17 books (10 authored) on Middle Eastern and Mediterranean affairs – including The Middle East from Empire to Sealed Identities (Edinburgh UP 2019), Imperial Perceptions of Palestine: British Influence and Power in Late Ottoman Times (I.B. Tauris 2015) and Arab Spring and Peripheries. A Decentring Research Agenda (Routledge 2016) – and was awarded with the 2010 “International Giuseppe Sciacca award”, the Fritz Thyssen Grant, and the 2016 “Palestine Academic Book Award”.
His publications include also over 30 articles on academic journals (such as: British Journal of Middle Eastern Studies, Mediterranean Politics, Peace and Change, Eurasian Studies, New Middle Eastern Studies, Passato e Presente, Oriente Moderno, The International Spectator, Storicamente), and about 200 articles on Al Jazeera, Ha’aretz, Al-Monitor, The National Interest, Project Syndicate and other media outlets in 10 languages, in over 30 countries. He regularly serves as a peer reviewer for the European Research Council (ERC Consolidator Grants), Routledge (History books), International Affairs (Chatham House), Eurias, and other institutions and publishing houses.
He speaks Italian, English, Hebrew, Arabic, has a working knowledge of French, Ottoman Turkish, and Latin. He is the proud father of Niccolò and Valerie.

Biography

Daniela Pioppi is associate professor of contemporary history of Arab countries at L'Orientale University of Naples. Trained as an Arabist and a political scientist (first degree in Oriental Studies, University of Rome 'La Sapienza', MA in comparative politics of the Middle East, SOAS, London University, and PhD in Political Science at the University of Pisa), she has a vast experience of field research in the Arab world. Her main research interests are comparative politics of the Middle East and North Africa region with a special emphasis on the recent evolution of Islamist movements/parties. She has directed several international research projects and she was Senior Fellow at the Mediterranean and Middle East Programme of the Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI).

Biography

Laura Guazzone is Associate Professor of History of the Contemporary Arab World at the Faculty of Oriental Studies, University of Rome La Sapienza. Trained as Arabist and expert of regional security, her main research interests are the comparative politics and international relations of the North Africa and Middle East countries. She was Senior Research Fellow of the International Affairs Institute where she directed several research projects, among which: Israeli-Palestinian Peace Research Project; The Political Role of Islamist Movements in Contemporary Arab World Project; The Middle East in Global Change Project. She is member of the editorial board of The International Spectator and of the international scientific board of Maghreb-Mashrek.

Biography

Andrea Dessì is Assistant Professor in International Relations and Global Politics at the American University of Rome (AUR). He previously headed IAI's Mediterranean, Middle East and Africa programme and Italian Foreign Policy programme. Andrea has worked extensively on US and European foreign policy towards the Middle East with a particular focus on the diplomatic and military history of the Arab-Israeli conflict, US policy towards Israel and Washington’s alliance frameworks in the Middle East. His research interests include security studies, the geopolitics of the Middle East and the intersection between global and regional trends and developments. Andrea holds a PhD in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) with a thesis on the US-Israel relationship during the 1980s. He worked with IAI between 2011-2023 and has contributed to a number of EU-funded projects and research tasks (FP7 & H2020).

Roberto Aliboni

Biography

Roberto Aliboni was IAI general director and vice-president. He taught International Economics at the Universities of Naples and Perugia from 1972 to 1979 and held research positions in different Institutes. In 1994, he conceived of and successfully established the Mediterranean Study Commission (MeSCo), the network of Mediterranean Institutes dealing with international and security affairs, transformed in EuroMeSCo in 1996.

Azzurra Meringolo is journalist at the foreign desk of the Giornale Radio Rai, where she mainly deals with Middle Eastern issues. She was a member of the editorial board of the IAI’s webzine AffarInternazionali. She holds a PhD in International Relations and is Adjunct Professor at the Università Roma Tre. Contributor to national and international newspapers, she was scientific coordinator of the Arab Media Report and presenter of Radio 3 Mondo (Rai3). In 2012 she won the Ivan Bonfanti journalism award and her doctoral thesis on Egyptian anti-Americanism was awarded the Maria Grazia Cutuli prize. In 2013 she won the Indro Montanelli writing prize with her book I ragazzi di piazza Tahrir and in 2014 the Franco Cuomo International Award (nonfiction section).She is founder and member of the Scientific Committee of WIIS Italy and member of the German Marshall Fund Leadership Council. Biography

Daniela Huber Daniela Huber is Assistant Professor in the Political Science Department of Roma Tre University. She is scientific advisor of the Mediterranean, Middle East and Africa Programme at IAI, which she had led from 2019 to 2022, and co-editor of The International Spectator.

Previously at IAI she has scientifically coordinated the European Commission funded Horizon 2020 Project MEDRESET (2016-2019), and been involved as co-workpackage leader in the Horizon Europe and 2020 projects SHAPEDEM-EU, BRIDGES, EU-LISTCO, as well as the Jean-Monnet Network EUMENIA.

Her research interests include IR theories and methodologies, international relations and contemporary politics in the Middle East, as well as EU and US foreign policy towards and their role in conflicts in the Middle East. On these issues, she has published two monographs (Palgrave and State University of New York Press), 15 peer-reviewed articles, 7 edited books, 6 book chapters and numerous research papers and commentaries. She has worked for the United Nations and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in the Middle East and has pursued extensive field research in the region as she lived for 5 years in Jerusalem, and organized/participated in workshops and conferences in Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Tunisia and Turkey.
