The use of sanctions in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine has been accompanied by the freezing of the Russia central bank reserves and the ban on the access to the SWIFT network for some Russian entities. European countries and other G7 members are now considering also to use Russia’s frozen assets or the revenues they generate in order to support Ukraine.

From Hiroshima to Trento, leading towards Ottawa - an informal dialogue with selected Italian private sector representatives, addressing the G7 Troika on its way towards the successful implementation of Italy's 2023 roadmap.

This side event brought together key players from the private sector to address the G7 Troika (Japan, Italy, and Canada) on their priorities, main action items, and potential bottlenecks towards the successful implementation of Italy's ambitious G7 Presidency roadmap in 2024.

Biography

Francesca Maremonti is Research Fellow for Asia within the “Global Actors” programme at the Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI). Her research work covers the relations between the European Union and the People’s Republic of China and, more broadly, with the Indo-Pacific region, with a particular focus on the economic security dimension. As a researcher, Francesca previously contributed to the IAI’s “Global Governance and Multilateralism” programme, focusing on digital governance and the G7 agenda.
Prior to joining IAI, she worked as a Research assistant at the Berlin office of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS). She contributed to the European Security and Defence team and to the China Programme with research on China’s influence strategies, digital governance, and the geopolitics of the Eastern Mediterranean. Previously, she gained experience in editing and advocacy holding positions at NGOs working in the field of international development.
Francesca holds a MSc in International Politics from SOAS University of London and a BA in Language, Culture and Society of Asia and Mediterranean Africa from Ca’ Foscari University in Venice, during which she completed a semester of study at East China Normal University in Shanghai.
