The geopolitical and geoeconomic shocks of the recent years have exposed the vulnerabilities of value chains and the EU’s strategic dependence on other global actors, such as China and the United States. The European Union has recently taken a number of measures to reduce the risks of value chains (de-risking) and to gain strategic autonomy, particularly in sectors with a higher risk of dependence.

The G7 and AI Governance

The Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI), along the year which saw the Italian government at the presidency of the G7, has undertaken a project to monitor and analyse the developments in the governance of artificial intelligence (AI), achieved under the G7 umbrella. As co-chair of the Think7 (T7) – the official engagement group of the Italian G7 presidency for 2024 – IAI conducted a study on the developments in the field of AI regulation, in the design of monitoring systems applied to AI developers, while looking at the main challenges involved in a global AI governance.

Biography

Marianna Lunardini is a researcher in the IAI Multilateralism and Global Governance program, where her activities are focused on development cooperation and international relations. She is also a researcher at the University of Siena, working on the project “Going global: An International History of Italy (1979-1996)”. With a master’s degree in Law, she is a qualified lawyer and holds a PhD in Political Studies from Sapienza University and two post master’s degree from SIOI. Her doctoral thesis centered on Italian foreign politics and development cooperation. In 2022, she has was a visiting PhD student at Fordham University (NYC). She has also been a research fellow at CeSPI ETS and is currently a member of the 3iM coordination group.

The Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI), on behalf of the Italian Presidency of the Council of Ministers, organized the hand-over event of the activities of the G7 Digital and Technology Working Group from the Italian to the Canadian Presidency of G7. At the event the representatives of the governments of Canada, Italy and Japan reaffirmed their shared desire to ensure continuity between the three Presidencies of G7 with regard to their commitment to advance global digital governance.
