Northeast Asia: Security and Regional Cooperation

A number of IAI papers analyse the evolving security order in Northeast Asia, including studies on China and Japan’s approaches to the region and the EU’s efforts to enhance its influence in the area, with particular reference to the Korean Peninsula. The research is the product of a partnership between IAI and the Korea Foundation and is led by IAI’s Asia programme.

The Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) is an intergovernmental forum for dialogue and cooperation established in 1996 to deepen relations between Asia and Europe. In view of the 11th ASEM Summit of Heads of State and Government held in July 2016 in Mongolia, the Italian MFA and IAI organised a joint event on 30 June at the Italian Parliament to discuss the outcome of the 9th Asia-Europe Parliamentary Partnership Meeting (ASEP9) held in April and offer useful feedbacks.

The Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) is an intergovernmental forum for dialogue and cooperation established in 1996 to deepen relations between Asia and Europe. The Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI) aims at promoting a deeper knowledge of it through the organisation of events and the drafting of policy reports and recommendations to foster bi-regional dialogue, focusing on ways to support the development of ASEM.

Biography

Stefania Benaglia is Associate Researcher at CEPS. She was associate fellow at the Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI), where she contributed to projects and research on India, EU-India relations and South Asia. Previously she worked as European Commission representative to the Politico Military Group (PMG) of the Council of the European Union, and in the Political and Security Committee (PSC) team at the Secretariat General of the European Commission. Stefania also worked as Research Assistant at NATO Parliamentary Assembly, and at the International Institute of Counter-Terrorism, Herzliya (Israel). Her research focuses on EU-India relations, South Asia, EU foreign and security policy, security and defence. Stefania holds a MA in strategic studies from the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), Johns Hopkins University.

A number of IAI papers assess the potential for economic growth, investments and cooperation in Europe-Asia relations. Papers analyse financial policies in Europe and Asia aimed at strengthening SMEs, China’s One Belt One Road initiative, Italian-Chinese investment trends and alternative strategies to foster growth in Europe and Asia.
