The event aims to explore the strategic choices Italy faces in light of multiple energy and climate challenges. The energy crisis and the war in Ukraine have revived energy security as a political priority, with the need to increase diversification of energy supplies. The reconfiguration of energy flows presents risks but also opportunities.

Max Münchmeyer

Biography

Max Münchmeyer was a researcher in the energy, climate and resources programme of the IAI. He is a doctoral researcher at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, where his work focuses on EU energy governance and energy solidarity. Max is a teaching assistant at the Florence School of Regulation and Senior Editor of the European Journal of Legal Studies (EJLS), having served as the publication’s Editor-in-Chief in 2021-22. He previously worked as energy and climate researcher at the Institute of International and European Affairs (IIEA) in Dublin, Ireland. He holds law degrees from Trinity College Dublin (LL.B.), the London School of Economics (LL.M.), and the EUI (LL.M.).

The event is an opportunity to look beyond the technicalities of single dossiers that are being discussed ‘in the bubble’ and take the pulse of where the overall strategy of the European Green Deal is heading, including a stocktaking on European RES targets after last year’s encouraging figures on solar rooftop deployment, strategic reflections on the ‘new normal’ in energy prices and tradeoffs in Europe’s strategy to control more of the critical material and net zero technology value chains.
