The Arab spring provides an opportunity to begin an in-depth analysis of civil-military relations in the Arab world. Such an exercise must be deemed a priority for the West given its potential to better understand the changes taking place throughout the region and consequently produce more informed assessments and ensuing policy responses.

“Smart Defence”, or how to ensure security despite defence budget constraints. This is one of the topics to be discussed at the NATO Summit scheduled for May 20 and 21in Chicago. To investigate this crucial matter that has been on the Atlantic Alliance’s agenda for a long time, the Istituto Affari Internazionali organized an international conference at the Italian Senate on April 26, with the support of the NATO Public Diplomacy Division and the participation of the Italian Minister of Defence, Giampaolo Di Paola.

EU-US Security Strategies

In this project, lasting 14 months, IAI acts as project leader. The study intends to provide a comparative analysis of the EU-US relationship with regard, in particular, to the definition of the security strategies of both actors, the evolution of their internal security, the security industry in the transatlantic context and the different approaches and perspectives of the respective transatlantic policies. The project includes two series of workshops to be held in Rome, Washington, Paris and Stockholm which involve both researchers of the four partner institutes and external experts.

SECUREMETRO - Inherently secure blast resistant and fire safe metro vehicles

SecureMetro aims to create an integrated safety and security model for metropolitan transport systems. The project will consider metro vehicles security and resilience performances in situations where an attack using conventional explosives and firebombs takes place, seeking the best combination of materials and structural design in order to minimize the impact of the attack on passengers, staff and infrastructure.

In this context, the first section is devoted to describe the necessary space capabilities to safeguard European sovereignty and the autonomous utilization of space for security purposes. The second section analyzes the current institutional European framework, which defines the main guidelines regarding space and security.

The first edition of the Transatlantic Security Symposium was held in Rome on May 12-13 in cooperation with the European Union Institute for Security Studies (EU-ISS) of Paris and the Center for Strategic and International Studies (DSIS) of Washington, DC. The conference explored the evolution of the transatlantic security partnership, with a focus on transatlantic cooperation in crisis management, the fight against terrorism, and the defence industry.
