The course “Medio Oriente e i Paesi del Golfo” aims at analysing the challenges that the countries of the Middle East and the Gulf States face today and in the future. It integrates theoretical and analytical tools of International Relations with the critical sensitivity of area studies. Economic and political scenarios, relations with global actors, factors of development and geopolitical change will be also be explored as well as their relations with international actors.

The discovery of hydrocarbons in Eastern Mediterranean waters was quickly followed by a resurgence in territorial disputes which have further complicated efforts to resolve the decades-old Cyprus conflict. The tensions between Turkey and Greece over maritime rights in the eastern Mediterranean, partly stemming from the unresolved conflict over the divided island of Cyprus, increased last summer.
