Key Trends Affecting the European Defence Technological Industrial Base

2017 - 2018

This project aimed to provide fresh analysis on the state of the EDTIB and its possible evolution in light of recent regional and global developments. The research provided a comprehensive assessment of the European defence industry landscape by examining the key trends, challenges and opportunities affecting the EDTIB, from both regional and global perspectives, and relevant European governments’ policies and defence industrial strategies. It also considered the possible impact of recent EU initiatives, including the European Defence Fund and Permanent Structured Cooperation, on the EDTIB. The project used quantitative statistics to underpin the analysis.
The Consortium selected by the EDA was led by IAI and comprised two other European think tanks – the Netherlands Institute of International Relations (Clingendael Institute) and the French Institute for International and Strategic Affairs (Institut de Relations Internationales et Stratégiques - IRIS). The Consortium also saw the participation of Associate Experts from the German Council on Foreign Relations (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Auswärtige Politik - DGAP), the EU Institute for Strategic Studies (EUISS), the International Institute of Strategic Studies (IISS).
