Ensuring peace and security in Africa: Implementing a new EU-Africa partnership

2009 - 2011

The project was aimed at assessing the European Union's possible contribution to peace and security in Africa, focusing on the development of the African Union's security policies, conflict prevention instruments and crisis management capabilities. It originated from a joint initiative of the IAI (Rome), the project leader, the EU Institute for Security Studies (Paris) and Chatham House (London). African researchers institutions, including the Centre de Recherches sur l'Etat en Afrique (CREA), were involved in both the research and dissemination phases. The launching conference was held in Rome on October 7-9, 2009 at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The papers and the report produced by the conference have been collected in the publication Ensuring Peace and Security in Africa: Implementing the New Africa-EU Partnership.

In 2010, IAI has also conducted a study on Consolidating African and EU assessments in view of the implementation of the partnership on peace and security, funded by the European Commission in view of the AU-EU Summit. The study was presented at an international conference organised by Chatham House in London on October 27-28, 2010 and at the EU Council within the Implementation Team on Peace and Security. The third seminar in the framework of the project was organised by the EU-ISS in Brussels on October 28, 2011.
