Bringing the Balkans Back on the EU agenda

2020 - 2021

On the backdrop of the beginning of a new EU institutional cycle and the adoption of a new methodology for EU accession negotiations, the project promoted a proactive discussion that contributed to maintain an effective commitment and cooperation between the EU and the Western Balkan countries. The aim was to help share responsibilities and promote common goals. Through the creation of working groups together with the European Policy Center, European Fund for the Balkans and SWP Brussles' Office, and public and closed-door meetings with the European Commission, the project has stimulated a reflection on how to update and renew the enlargement policy and its instruments. The assumptions, objectives, instruments and methods of the enlargement policy as well as of the EU itself must be rethought in order to retain its original spirit and vision.
