Biography

Michael Werz is a scholar and policy expert with a focus on climate migration, US foreign policy, transatlantic relations including Turkey and Mexico. He contributes to the IAI-led project “Nexus25: Shaping multilateralism” and previously has done academic research on migration and diversity, Anti-Americanism in Germany and Europe, US foreign and security policy, non-traditional threat scenarios (climate change, human mobility and conflict, Muslim and other minorities in Europe and the United States). Academic publications and teaching include intellectual migration and Western intellectual history, dynamics of race and ethnicity in 20th century United States and Europe, prejudice and xenophobia, traditional and modern anti-semitism. He holds an MA and PhD in Philosophy from Goethe University in Frankfurt, and a Postdoctoral degree (Habilitation) from Leibniz University in Hannover. He has held appointments as a public policy scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, and as Kennedy Fellow at Harvard’s Center for European Studies.

Biography

Margherita Bianchi is Head of the IAI's "Energy, climate and resources" programme, where she currently coordinates research projects related to Italian, European and international energy and climate policies developments. Her research interests focus on climate policies and their interplay with other policy siloes, energy governance and the related EU external engagement and foreign policy. Before joining the IAI in 2018, she had worked at the European Parliament, with the 2017 task force of the Italian Group of Seven presidency, and interned at the UN Environment Program. Margherita holds political science, international relations and EU affairs degrees from the Catholic University of Milan (BA), the LUISS School of Government in Rome (MA), the Institute of European Studies in Brussels (MA). She frequently provides expert insights to international and Italian news/media outlets.

EU energy and climate securities in a geostrategic context

The EU Global Strategy of 2016 identified five strategic priorities actions: security & defence, building resilience and taking an integrated approach, strengthening the internal/external nexus, updating existing strategies and preparing new ones, enhancing public diplomacy. In March 2017, the EU Foreign Affairs Council agreed on strengthening the synergies between the relevant elements of the climate and energy diplomacies as part of the implementation of the EU Global Strategy and established a set of overall climate priorities for 2017.
