This project assessed the contributions of Italy and the European Union to the functioning and reform of the UN security system and put forward policy recommendations aimed at increasing their role in the definition and implementation of the international security agenda.

The results were published in IAI Quaderni. English series n. 11, Strenghtening the UN security system: the role of Italy and the EU.

In recent years migrations from the Mediterranean area towards the South European coastlines have become a highly topical issue, both on a national and international level. Spain and Italy are particularly exposed to this serious phenomenon but their ways of dealing with it are dissimilar in a number of points. Moreover, there is a lack of solutions at a European level.

This study analyzed the possible future use of dual-use helicopters in military operations. At the same time, the project discussed the pros and cons for each use examined as well as the related limitations by considering the British, French and Italian cases. The study mainly adopted a EU perspective but it also considered the main trends both in the United States and in NATO members. The results were published in the IAI Research Paper series and presented in Rome inOctober 2014.

Since 2013 IAI, in cooperation with Centro Interdipartimentale di ricerca sul cambiamento politico (CIRCaP) of the University of Siena, has realized periodic surveys aimed at identifying and assessing public opinion trends regarding Italian foreign policy. The surveys are conducted on a representative sample of individuals living in Italy.
