EU crisis management missions and the role of Italy

2009 - 2014

The objective of this research project is to assess the evolution of EU crisis management missions and the participation of Italy. In particular, it aims to evaluate the effectiveness of EU missions, with a special focus on training and recruitment of personnel, as well as the proposals for reforming national and European legislation. In the framework of this project, the IAI, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Sant’Anna School for Advanced Studies has created Nifope - Network Italiano Formazione Peacekeeping ed Emergenze, a network of Italian institutions which strive to facilitate the exchange of information and best practices, as well as the development of joint activities between the institutions concerned. The papers presented at the launching seminar (4-5 November 2009), together with the report of the event, have been collected in the publication L'Italia nelle missioni civili dell'UE. Criticità e prospettive (IAI Quaderni 35). The IAI will continue its research activities in this sector also in the framework of the Mission Analysis Partnership - Csdp Map, coordinated by ISIS Europe , and in collaboration with the CFSP/CSDP Unit at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
