Cooperation in the Mediterranean and the Middle East

2009 - 2014

This program - launched in 2009 on the basis of a strategic partnership with the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) (see press release) - aimed at exploring the possibilities of cooperation between the United States and Europe in the Mediterranean and the Middle East.
In 2012-13, research focused on new dynamics that are evolving in the Mediterranean and the Middle East in light of a changing global power structure and the transformation of the region. In particular, the following subjects were addressed:

  • the Mediterranean area’s growing economic, political, and social connection with emerging economic and political powers, in particular Brazil, Russia, India, and China (BRIC);
  • new dynamics in trade and investments, energy, movements of people, and civil society in the Mediterranean region after the “Arab Spring” with an emphasis on their implications for relations with Western actors;
  • evolving security dynamics in African-Mediterranean relations after the Arab Spring with a focus on Egypt-Sudan, the Sahel security complex, and Libya.

The programme produced two series, a paper series named Mediterranean Papers and an opinion piece series named Op-Med, all published by the German Marshall Fund of the United States, Washington.
