Italian-German Strategic Dialogue

Current

The Italian-German Strategic Dialogue (IGSD) is the continuation of the Italian-German Strategic Forum, organised by the IAI since 2016 on an almost annual basis. From the outset, the aim of the initiative has been to intensify relations between Italy and Germany by promoting a honest exchange on current issues between political exponents, stakeholders belonging to the private sector, scholars, public administration officials and think-tank researchers from the two countries. The Strategic Dialogue is the result of the collaboration between Hanns Seidel Stiftung (HSS), co-financier of the initiative, the Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP) and the Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI). The project is further realised in strategic partnership with the Fondazione CSF and Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo.
The first edition of the Dialogue held in Rome on 30 November 2022, discussed the possibility of an Action Plan between Italy and Germany set to expand the existing bilateral collaboration. The second edition was held in Berlin on 26 January 2024 and focused mostly on the economic and defence sectors. The third edition of the Italian–German Strategic Dialogue took place in Rome on 25-26 September 2025, addressing European competitiveness and security guarantees for Ukraine within the broader framework of European strategic interest.
