Coffee at the crossroads

-

Coffee is at the crossroads. While the impact of droughts, floods and more generally of the climate crisis is hitting hard production in most countries, this is resulting in major price increases which will and is already affecting roasters and consumers alike. At the same time, a changing market, an uncertain future of coffee certifications, and policy changes – above all the introduction of the EU Deforestation-Free Regulation (EUDR) – are producing major shifts in the structure of the global supply chain, whose future is still unclear to many. Small producers, who are often behind the most sustainable and high quality production, as well as countries with a less consolidated production are the players facing the most risks, but the sector as a whole is facing major and, to some extent, still unpredictable changes.
The project will analyse the impact of these factors on the coffee sector, its likely evolution for the next future. It will highlight the best suited tools to address these issues, such as national and international policies, changes in the structure of production and in the regulation of the sector globally.
