Opening up the G7 to South Korea to Address Contemporary Global Challenges
The G7 is experiencing a profound crisis as US obstruction under the Trump Administration limits its ability to act on global challenges. This situation has highlighted the constraints of a format that depends on consensus and US leadership, raising questions about the forum’s future effectiveness and legitimacy. At the same time, the remaining members continue to share interests and values, as well as mounting pressures from both Washington and Beijing. South Korea, with its democratic resilience, economic and technological strengths, and global influence, emerges as a natural partner in this context. A G6+ format that brings together the non-US G7 states with Seoul could sustain cooperation where the G7 falters, create space to allow middle powers coordinate and align their responses to US alliance pressure, and preserve elements of international governance by democratic, advanced economies in an increasingly fragmented order.
