Twenty years after the end of the Cold War, outer space is still the object of competition and conflict between states. While the major international treaties intend it to be used for "peaceful purposes" for the benefit of mankind, in recent years, space has been rapidly militarized and had become a vital sector for defence and security. This has made it possible to use it for diplomatic and political leverage to strengthen relations between countries, but also to reflect the new balance of power. Space activities have therefore become an integral part of the strategic positioning of emerging countries and the European Union has also had to recognize its importance as an instrument of integration and political independence. The book analyzes the space activities used for security and defence purposes, considering their multi-dimensionality - from their legal framework to the integration of security and defence policies and their ability to deliver a real strategic advantage - highlighting the main problems.
