The fourth issue of the 2018 Euro-Atlantic Focus begins, as usual, with an analysis of the state of play in the transatlantic relationship (supplemented by a number of graphs in the appendix). During the last three months of 2018 the US and Europe were unable to make any progress on the various issues on which they are at loggerheads (trade talks, their respective approach to China’s unfair economic policies, the US organised summit on the Middle East, etc.). In the first essay of this Focus, Ettore Greco elaborates on the state of play of arms control arrangements, with a special focus on the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF Treaty). The second essay explains the US position on Europe’s defence cooperation initiatives. Andrea Aversano Stabile focuses especially on President Trump policy. In the third essay Nicola Bilotta analyses Venezuela’s troubled relationship with the European Union and especially the US after Maduro’s authoritarian turn.
