The Covid-19 pandemic prompted a deep rethink of global health systems, which appeared ill-equipped to provide equal access to healthcare in times of crisis, especially on the African continent. In response to these stark inequalities and to prevent their reoccurrence in the next pandemic, a host of initiatives was launched to strengthen Africa’s health product manufacturing capacity. This report provides an overview of existing efforts in this sphere, linking them with the challenges of building African manufacturing capacity, the policy frameworks that support these initiatives, and suggesting a number of areas where G7 countries, under the lead of Italy’s Presidency in 2024, could make an impact towards achieving greater preparedness and equity.
