Earth Observation against Environmental Crimes. A Review of Users and Usages Worldwide
This report is the first encompassing review of users and usages of Earth Observation against environmental crimes, considering major sectors and adopting a worldwide focus.
It aims at providing useful, ready-to-use information designed for all players involved in action against environmental crimes – enforcement agents, prosecutors, judges, representatives of civil society, members of academia and representatives of international organisations. It has the twofold objective of giving fundamental information about how EO is and can be used against environmental crimes, including how its use can be empowered; and of sharing practical data about successful applications, key players and availability of data and platforms.
The structure of the analysis is divided as follows: 1) a general analysis that contains essential information about how and why EO is being used around the world to fight environmental crimes; 2) a sectoral analysis that provides insights for each of the main sectors of environmental crimes where EO is applied; 3) a case study analysis that contains ten case studies chosen among the most successful, impactful and replicable applications.
