The Institute for International Affairs (IAI) and the Italian Embassy in Maputo promoted the conference entitled From Aid to Partnership: Supporting Health and Investing in Mozambique’s Future, on the role of the Mattei Plan in supporting health programmes and facilities in Mozambique.

The meeting, held in Maputo on 4 October, was attended by government officials, experts, diplomats and representatives of the cooperation, voluntary and business sectors, together with representatives of the Global Fund, GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance, Focus 2030 and the Gates Foundation.

The initiative, developed as part of an IAI research project and also aimed at encouraging greater public–private partnership in the health sector, focused on Mozambique, a priority country for Italian cooperation and one linked to Italy by a deep friendship dating back to independence and the peace agreements of the 1990s.

Speaking at the conference, the President of the Institute, Michele Valensise, underlined: “The health-support project confirms Italy’s commitment to cooperation with Mozambique in a sector that is crucial to the country’s development, and benefits from a close and productive relationship with Mozambican authorities and practitioners.”

“We will bring back to Rome,” he added, “the gratitude of all our partners and the strong hope that the programme will be strengthened, with particular attention within the framework of the implementation of the Mattei Plan for Africa.”
