On March 26, the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (FES), the Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI) and the German-Italian Centre for European Excellence Villa Vigoni organized a conference entitled “Unione europea: 60+1”. The event aimed to reflect on the current political and institutional situation in the European Union and the future of the European project. The EU seems internally divided, and while reforms of economic governance and social policies are needed for the Union to be more cohesive, consensus among the EU countries on certain issues is very difficult to achieve. In this context, it is the security and defence sector which could, led by the “Franco-German engine”, be one of the driving forces of the EU.
