President Donald Trump’s openness towards President Vladimir Putin raised concerns within the European Union, whose integrity is already at stake due to inner dynamics. European relations with Russia cannot be confined to the energy cooperation, leaving out the nuclear issue and the future of the former Soviet Republics from debates. This article highlights the lack of a comprehensive and congruent European policy toward Moscow and the risk that Putin could hence be incentivized to weaken the European multilateral framework in favor of more advantageous bilateral relations. This could lead Russia to prefer China or the United States to the EU as privileged partner.
