Athletes' Early Responses to the War Against Ukraine

This chapter examines athletes’ public responses to the war in Ukraine. It discusses these athletes taking a stand within the context of the role and limits of athletes’ agency. The emerging international debate about athletes’ freedom of expression is highlighted, especially with respect to the Olympic Games and international tennis events. The chapter examines the actions of Ukrainian as well as international athletes to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the overall guidance and lack of sanctions by international sporting bodies. The ban on Russian athletes and teams from most international sports competitions is discussed as part of the politicization of international sport.
