Sub-Saharan Africa has become the focal point of the EU’s external migration policy, but the risk now is a relapse into short-term initiatives, focusing on security issues (as in the case of Italy's nascent military mission in Niger) without any development objective. As for internal policy, the EU's struggle to reform the asylum system has ended up exacerbating the eternal divide between Eastern and Western European member States.
