Disaster Displacement and International Protection in the EU. Challenges, Misconceptions, and the Way Forward

As disasters, climate change and environmental degradation increasingly affect patterns of human mobility, the question of how to protect people displaced across borders in disaster contexts has become ever more urgent. Yet, the EU lags behind with no common protection avenue for people displaced across borders in the context of disasters, and with only three Member States - Italy, Cyprus, and Finland – that currently offer an explicit provision to that effect.

Join us for the online launch event of Disaster Displacement and International Protection in the EU: Challenges, Misconceptions, and the Way Forward, the sixth book of the Trends and Perspectives in International Politics series published by Routledge. The author, Chiara Scissa (University of Bologna), together with discussants, Walter Kälin (Envoy of the Chair of the Platform on Disaster Displacement and professor emeritus at University of Bern) and Sanjula Weerasinghe (Senior Research and Policy Associate at the Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law, UNSW Sydney), will examine the challenges and misconceptions surrounding disaster displacement in the EU, with a focus on existing legislation, policies and case law. The discussion will be chaired by Riccardo Alcaro, Ad interim Editor of the Trends and Perspectives in International Politics series.
