Re-energizing the Italian-Canadian relationship: A dialogue on CRMs security
The project aims to strengthen dialogue and cooperation between Italy and Canada on energy security, with a specific focus on critical raw materials (CRMs). Against a backdrop of growing geopolitical tensions, highly concentrated value chains and the increasing use of economic and technological dependencies as instruments of pressure, the project examines how Italy and Canada can contribute to building more secure, diversified and resilient supply chains.
The research will explore opportunities for bilateral cooperation while considering the role of the European Union, G7 and NATO, as well as existing initiatives in this field. Particular attention will be devoted to identifying minerals of strategic relevance to both countries, potential joint projects and the tools that can strengthen security of supply. In this context, the project will also consider the potential of emerging areas for supply diversification and cooperation, including the Arctic, which is becoming increasingly relevant to debates on critical resources and resilient value chains.
The project combines research and stakeholder dialogue. Activities include a closed-door bilateral workshop bringing together policymakers, experts, private-sector and diplomatic representatives; research and stakeholder consultations; the publication of a research paper containing policy recommendations; and two final events in Italy and Canada to present and discuss the project’s main findings.
