Sofia Papastavrou: Climate, inclusion and resilience
Sofia Papastavrou, a gender expert at World Vision Canada and a member of the Women, Peace and Security Network of Canada and our network, reflects on the increasingly close links between peacebuilding, climate change, and humanitarian action.
Drawing on projects carried out in Somalia, South Sudan, Bangladesh, and Mozambique, Sofia explains why peacebuilding can no longer be addressed in isolation. Humanitarian action, climate resilience, and mediation must reinforce one another so that communities can build lasting stability—especially in contexts where women are often the first to suffer the consequences of conflict and climate change.
Although women continue to keep dialogue alive within their communities, Sofia emphasizes that they are still too often excluded from formal decision-making spaces.
