Bilateral Disputes and the Role of Member States in EU Enlargement

The event brought together policymakers, researchers and experts in a panel discussion on the political drivers of bilateral disputes in the EU enlargement process and the role of veto power in shaping its pace and direction. Moving beyond debates centred on voting rules alone, panelists examined how and when veto opportunities become politicised and how their disruptive effects can be contained. The discussion also explored practical avenues for resolving different types of disputes, and the conditions under which member states can act as enablers of enlargement. The event was organized by the Istituto Affari Internazionali, in cooperation with the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies at the University of Warsaw, the Future Democracy Lab at Jagiellonian University and the Res Publica Foundation, with the support of the Open Society Foundations – Western Balkans within the framework of the InCLUDE initiative.
