The first issue of the Euro-Atlantic Focus of 2026 opens, as usual, with an analysis of the state of transatlantic relations (accompanied by a series of graphs). Riccardo Alcaro and Luca Barana delve into the unprecedented crisis triggered by the Trump Administration’s territorial ambitions over Greenland, which directly affects European defence, NATO’s role and the management of the Russia-Ukraine war. In the section on US domestic politics, Alcaro traces the period of intense turbulence the United States went through between autumn 2025 and January 2026. In the special essay, Alessandro Marrone and Gaia Ravazzolo, respectively Head and Researcher of the Defence, Security and Space Programme at IAI, outline recent developments in European defence.
