The world economy has changed considerably over recent years. The US-Chinaconflict dominates today’s international stage. Given these shifts in the international economic system, the EU is being forced to strengthen its own position in the world.

According to Paolo Guerrieri, IAI's scientific advisor, a more autonomous foreign economic policy strategy will affect broad priority areas. Firstly, a broader EU trade policy and foreign investment strategy. Furthermore, a reduction of the Union’s widening technological gap compared the US and China is fundamental, especially in the field of the digital technologies characterising the fourth industrial revolution.
