The future of aviation is increasingly focused on sustainability and decarbonisation, with research and development programmes dedicated to reducing fuel consumption, emissions and noise pollution. Innovations include new engine architectures, hybrid-electric propulsion, advanced turboprops and the use of sustainable fuels such as SAF and hydrogen. At the same time, in the military sector, sixth-generation aircraft will require advanced energy management solutions, with an evolution towards power and propulsion systems capable of providing thrust and producing energy for on-board systems. This implies new technological challenges, such as the research of innovative materials to reduce thermal signatures. The entire aeronautical propulsion supply chain, from Avio Aero to SMEs, including start-ups and universities, plays a crucial role in ensuring resilience, competitiveness and leadership at European and international level.

These issues are the focus of an IAI study, realised with the support of Avio Aero, which will be presented at a conference on 25 September 2025 and discussed by authoritative representatives of the armed forces, industry and national institutions.
