Multilateralism, changing alliances, sovereignty. Which kind of world order do we want?

18/06/2019, Rome, Fondazione Romaeuropa

History teaches us that international institutions need political backing. They cannot be taken for granted. Multilateral mechanisms for international problem-solving have a proven track record in saving lives, generating economic and social progress and preventing descents into conflicts and wars. If we want to uphold a multilateral order, we have to invest in it. We need to maintain its legitimacy. We have to nurture it every day, particularly when the sands start shifting under the foundations. This is why the Istituto Affari Internazionali and the German Embassy in Rome engage for a strong and effective multilateralism.
