Call for applications

To strengthen transatlantic cooperation and deepen understanding of the challenges facing Italy, Europe, and the United States, the Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI) and the German Marshall Fund of the U.S. (GMF) are accepting applications for a fellowship for a period of 12 months (September 2019-August 2020). The Fellow will be based at GMF headquarters in Washington, DC and will conduct his or her own research on topics related to Italy and the transatlantic relationship, the European Union and NATO, and transatlantic foreign, defence and security policy.

Responsibilities of the fellow

The Fellow will carry out innovative and practical research on a spectrum of political, security, and economic topics related to U.S.-Italian and U.S.-European cooperation and shared interests. S/he will contribute to the Italy-related dimensions of GMF’s research and outreach and will be fully integrated into its policy work, conducting and publishing research and analysis, participating in meetings and events, maintaining relations with members of the foreign policy, academic and think tank community, making media appearances, and contributing to programmatic strategic discussions with officials and policymakers, and representatives of the diplomatic and nonprofit sectors. The Fellow will work closely with GMF staff and other GMF fellows and will present the results of his/her research at workshops, roundtables and other events at GMF. The Fellow will also receive mentoring from IAI and be fully integrated in its Italy’s Foreign Policy Programme but will also work in close collaboration with other programmes such as Security, Defence and Global Actors, contributing to their research projects. The results of the Fellow’s research activities will be published as co-branded IAI-GMF Papers. In particular, the Fellow is expected to deliver at least two long papers (around 5,000 words each) and three short pieces (around 1.500 words each) throughout the duration of the fellowship.

GMF will provide the Fellow with office space and equipment. A gross yearly salary equal to $60,000 will also be provided. Assistance with the visa application process will be provided; however, GMF cannot guarantee the issuance of a visa. The fellowship will start on 1 September 2019 and will end on 31 August 2020.

Eligibility

  • Applicants should be Italian nationals.
  • Applicants should have either policy experience (at least three years) or an advanced degree in international relations, political science, economics or related field. A Ph.D. in one of these fields would be preferred.
  • Ideal candidates should have a combination of academic and professional experience in one or more of the following fields: Italian politics and foreign policy; EU politics and institutions; European integration and foreign policy; transatlantic relations; and European defence and security matters.
  • Applicants must have superior qualitative research, writing, editing and organizational skills; a demonstrated ability to conduct independent research and to produce a range of publications of the highest quality, including opinion pieces and longer analytical articles; ease in effectively articulating research concepts and recommendations through verbal and written communications in English and Italian; ability to actively take part in Washington foreign-policy debates and transatlantic discussions, through participation in workshops, conferences and meetings with the media.
  • The Fellow is expected to be in residence and working full-time at GMF during the fellowship.

  1. A detailed Curriculum Vitae including a list of publications.
  2. A cover letter explaining the applicant’s areas of expertise and qualifications for the fellowship.
  3. A short description (max 800 words) of a potential research project the Fellow would undertake while at GMF.
