Do Italians believe that the international order is essentially predatory or fair and rule based? This fundamental question can be unpacked by answering three further questions. First, do Italy’s policies suggest an underlying Hobbesian or Kantian worldview? Second, to what kind of world order would Italians aspire and be ready to contribute? Third, if there is a gap between the answers to these fi rst two questions, why does it exist and how could it be bridged?
