"The course of true love never did run smooth," as William Shakespeare would likely say as he described energy relations between the European Union and Russia. As such, the formal antitrust investigation recently launched by the European Commission into the Russian state-owned energy firm Gazprom can be seen as the last act of a long and sometimes troubled engagement.
