Sanctions, Diplomacy and International Law

With Europe facing difficult choices on whether to relax or expand the existing sanctions regime against Russia, a new IAI research document analyses the relationship between coercive diplomacy and international law. Summarizing the proceedings of an international conference held in Rome and organized by IAI in partnership with ENI and Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, the document addresses the overall effectiveness of sanctions as a tool for foreign policy, the EU's approach to sanctions and their impact on existing treaties, non-state actors and individual rights.
