Italy’s relationship with the U.S. is marked by strong social, economic and political ties. Over 17 million Americans are of Italian descent and hundreds of thousands of Italians work in the U.S. Bilateral trade exceeds EUR 100 billion, while political-security cooperation is robust, bolstered by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s support for Ukraine. Despite differing views on some issues, Italy generally supports transatlantic collaboration, which benefits its interests within the EU. Trump’s return to the White House could impact Italy’s policies on Ukraine, European defence and trade, with Meloni likely to adapt her approach accordingly.
