In May 2024, South Africa entered yet another pivotal moment that will not only test its commitment to democratic governance but shape its governance landscape for at least the next 5 years. For the first time in 30 years, the ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC), lost its ability to govern alone.

This significant development forced the ANC into an uncomfortable position of negotiating a future government with its political rivals. On 21 June 2024, the ANC released a statement confirming that 10 political parties had agreed to form an “ANC-led” government of national unity. Internationally, while the full impact on the South Africa’s foreign policy remains uncertain, it is evident that the new government will need to adapt its foreign policy to reflect these new political dynamics.
