The EU as a global actor in the UN reform process

2009 - 2011

This two-year research project was focused on the role of the European Union in the United Nations reform process, looking both at previous efforts and at current trends. The research is was conducted together with the University of Kiel (Germany) and entailed the establishment of two working groups, composed of experts and high-level political stakeholders, who were called upon to address the issue of Security Council reform (Working Group I) and cooperation between the EU and the UN in the fields of peacekeeping, peace-enforcing and peace-building (Working Group II). The project was financed by the Volkswagen Stiftung.
The launching conference of the project was held in Rome on 19 March 19, 2009. Two meetings of WG II, coordinated by the University of Kiel, were held in Berlin on October 8-9, 2009 and March 29-30, 2010. Two meetings of WG I were organised in Rome by IAI on November 12-13, 2009 (programme and report) and May 13-14, 2010 (programme and report). During the last event, two papers by N. Ronzitti and N. Pirozzi and a background note by E. Martini were presented. The papers and reports produced by the working groups are available on the project website and has been collected in a final publication. The closing event of the project was held in Berlin on July 7-8, 2011.
