Focus euroatlantico n. 6 (maggio-settembre 2024)

17/09/2024

The third Euro-Atlantic Focus of 2024 opens, as usual, with an analysis of the state of transatlantic relations (accompanied by a series of graphs). Riccardo Alcaro and Luca Barana focus extensively on the transatlantic support for Ukraine against the Russian invasion and the so far unsuccessful attempts at ending Israel’s onslaught on Gaza and bring back the hostages still in Hamas’ hands. They also point to the growing tensions between the West and China over commerce and Beijing’s support for Russia in Ukraine that loom large on the horizon. In the section on US domestic politics, Alcaro and Barana look back at the tumultuous summer months of the US presidential campaign, which saw Republican challenger Trump escape an assassination attempt and President Biden withdraw in favour of Vice-President Harris as the Democratic Party candidate. The race remains tight. In the special essay, Ettore Greco and Margherita Bianchi, Maria Luisa Fantappié and Darlington Tshuma illustrate the state of play of the Global Gateway in Africa, the EU’s infrastructure development initiative.
