Italy's
foreign policy
Italy's foreign policy has been a central area
of research since IAI's foundation. The Institute
regularly organises national as well as
international conferences and seminars on the
topic, and a number of studies are produced
annually. They focus on various aspects of Italy's
external action, such as Italy's EU and
Mediterranean policies, relations with the US and
security and defence strategies. The main goal of
research activities is to identify the
implications for Italy of major international
developments, and the strategic options that the
country should adopt and implement to boost its
international role.
IAI publishes an Italian foreign policy
yearbook which critically reviews the country's
foreign policy conduct in the given year. IAI's
English-language quarterly The
International Spectator regularly
includes a section on "Italy in World Affairs".
Italy's foreign policy choices are also discussed
in the Institute's Italian-language webzine Affarinternazionali.it.

Projects in progress
Italian foreign policy chronology (R.Alcaro)
IAI regularly posts on its website a detailed
chronology of Italy's foreign policy.
Italian foreign policy
yearbook (G.Bonvicini-R. Matarazzo)
Starting in 2010, IAI's
annual review of Italy's role in the international
context will evolve into a more specific and
factual yearbook on Italy's foreign policy. It is
now broken down into an introduction which analyses
and assesses the country's foreign policy
performance on the basis of statistical data and a
number of chapters, each focusing on one aspect of
Italy's external action. The volume also includes
two chronologies, one of major international events
and one of Italy's foreign policy, as well as an
analytical index. The yearbook is a joint project of
IAI and ISPI, and is published by il Mulino.
Foreign policy talks (E.Greco-R.Matarazzo)
IAI conducts this project in cooperation with the
Institute of Diplomacy and the Analysis and Planning
Unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It aims to
give young diplomats and professionals specialising
in international relations the chance to talk and
discuss openly with experienced officials and
specialists. The project comprises a cycle of 12
seminars, to be held every month, on topical issues
relevant to Italy's interests and role. Panels
feature prominent representatives from government,
international organisations, the academy and the
research world. Italy's foreign minister Franco
Frattini was the main speaker of the kick-off
meeting on 17 June 2009.
International Relations
Observatory (R.Alcaro, E.Greco)
This a joint project conducted by IAI and three
other research centres in cooperation with Italy's
Parliament. The objective is to provide members of
parliaments, in particular the delegations to the
parliamentary assemblies of international
organisations (most notably NATO) and the Defence
and Foreign Affairs Committees of the Senate and
Chamber of Deputies, as well as the staff of the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs and members of the
diplomatic-consular network, with a regularly
upgraded analysis of major international
developments. For this project, IAI prepares four
different kinds of products:
short briefs
that synthetically inform about and examine single
topics of international relevance;
analytical reports
addressing bigger and more complex issues;
quarterly reports
that take stock of the state of the transatlantic
relationship;
long, in-depth studies
cthat concentrate on broad and complex issues and
identify possible future scenarios
