Transatlantic Cooperation in the
Mediterranean and the Middle East
Projects
concludedIn the framework of its wider programme on Transatlantic Relations
supported by the German Marshall Fund of the United States, the IAI
monitored the
transatlantic dimension of EU-USA relations.
The 2007-8 programme
focused on two
research themes:
The analysis of Islamist movements and parties of the Middle East and
Nord Africa region. On this theme the IAI
carried on a research activity coordinated with the
research project on Islamist movements and political change in
the Arab World.
The prospects of transatlantic cooperation in the Mediterranean region
and the Middle East. The 28th of June a seminar was held in Rome on The transatlantic
perspectives on the Mediterranean with the support of the GMFUS and EuroMeSCo. The
seminar aimed at debating the relevance of the Mediterranean as a framework for
transatlantic cooperation. Three more specific issues were discussed: the competition and
the cooperation between US and EU in the Maghreb; current developments in Turkey; the
state of cooperation on nuclear energy for civilian use in a context of nuclear weapons
proliferation.
Two papers were presented during the seminar: (1) Yahya Zoubir, Maghreb: EU-US
Cooperation or Competition?; (2) Giacomo Luciani, Nuclear Energy Developments in
the Mediterranean and the Gulf. A third paper by Joseph Pilat,
Nuclear power development in the Middle East and North Africa: assessing the risks of proliferation and terrorism,
has been commissioned for the completion of the programme.
