Competitiveness and internationalization of the Italian economic system: the key role of business services

Considering the relevance of services in international exchanges and in the internationalization processes, the basic aim of the joint IAI-Fondazione Manlio Masi-Ice project is to discuss different kinds of services and their role in stimulating competitiveness and internationalization of Italian companies. There are three main issues: 1) Italian international exchanges and investments in the service sector; 2) case studies in order to individualize trends of growth, localization factors and specificities of production services with particular attention to their perspectives of international expansion; 3) proposals on instruments as well as policies for the development of business services. In this perspective, a "best practice" approach will be used with the comparison of other countries in terms of: business services endowment; presence of qualified companies in the advanced tertiary sector, and their contribution to the active and passive internationalization process of regions; and effective policies dedicated to the growth and internationalization of services. The choice may fall on European countries such as Germany, France, Spain and Austria. The programme will expand on a 14 month term with a partition of the activities in two phases: a preliminary phase (4 months) devoted to the definition of the methodological approach, as well as of the theoretical and empirical bases of the research. The second phase foresees the development and the completion of the research path with the elaboration of papers that have the support of a wide range of eternal experts: scholars, consultants, other Institutes' researchers, representatives from institutions and firms. Papers will be presented during a workshop and collected in a volume to be published in a Fondazione Masi series. Within the project  took place in Rome the international conference on "Italy's external competitiveness".
