The volume
The fourth volume of the IAI-ISPI yearbook,
follows the political and economic events of the year 2002.
The eighteen chapters that make up this volume examine and interpret the chain
of consequences that occurred throughout 2002, following the terrorist attacks
of September 11th 2001 in Washington and New York, which have influenced
every aspect of international life, In effect, the "global war against terrorism"
has become the guiding line and criterion of action for the great world power, the United
States, but it is also at the top of the agenda of the main
international, regional and world-wide organisations, starting from the United
Nations. As regards to the international institutions that operate in the economic and financial
sector, problems connected to the transparency of transactions and exchanges have acquired a
valence and political urgency that were previously unknown.
The first section of this volume offers the customary panorama of the international scene.
In light of this, the general outlines of Italian foreign policy are analysed in the
second part of the volume, together with questions of unquestionable international
importance, such as immigration regulations and the foreign policy competence of
regions. The third part of the yearbook opens with a close-up view on the processes of change in
Italy's international identity in the European Union and Nato, while a specific section
is dedicated to the challenges that have arisen in world economy, from the search
for new rules following the recent financial scandals (Enron) to the debt crises
of emerging countries. The volume concludes with a review of the areas that have
become crucial for world political-economical stability and equilibrium:
the Middle East and the Persian Gulf, the Caucasus, central-southern Asia and Latin America.
