Turkey: foreign and domestic policy
IAI follows closely the main developments of contemporary Turkey in
the context of EU enlargement and transatlantic relations. In recent years,
Turkey has established itself as an important regional actor. Research has been
conducted on the role that Turkey plays in the EU's neighborhood and its contribution
to regional stability in areas such as the Caucasus and the Middle East.
Particular attention has been paid to how the European Union and its member states
view Turkey and react to its internal dynamics and foreign policy initiatives.
In this context, several studies have been produced with a view to identifying
the main sources of concern and skepticism that still undermine an open dialogue
between European and Turkish societies.
While carrying out its activities, IAI has established a network with some of the
leading research institutions working on contemporary Turkey. Among these,
the German Marshall Fund of the United States, Sabanci University, the Ankara-based
Economic Policy Research Foundation of Turkey (TEPAV) and the Center for European Studies
of the Middle East Technical University.
IAI's main publications on Turkey have been presented at EU institutions, including the
European Parliament and the Commission. They have been also the object of debate in
several international conferences and lectures.
Turkey, Europe and the World: Political, Economic and Foreign Policy Dimensions of Turkey's Evolving Relationship with the EU (N.Tocci)
IAI, the Istanbul Policy Centre and the Mercator Foundation, with the collaboration of the German Marshall Fund, are conducting a project on EU-Turkey relations. The overarching theme and assumption of the project is that the EU is changing, Turkey too, and above all there is systemic change and crisis all round, ranging from economics, the spread of democratic norms and foreign policy. In view of this, this project aims at exploring how the EU and Turkey can enhance their cooperation (within, not necessarily beyond the accession process), in the political, economic, security domains.
For publications see the series Global Turkey in Europe and the
issue No. 9 of the IAI Research Paper series.
Since 2009, IAI has contributed to this initiative of Unicredit in cooperation with the
Center for Strategic Research (Stratejik Arastirmalar Merkezi - SAM) and and the Italian
and Turkish Ministries of Foreign Affairs, which is held on alternate years in Rome and Istanbul.
This is an event of high cultural and political profile, which aims to encourage dialogue between
Turkish and Italian civil societies and to support the accession of Turkey to the European Union.
The eighth Forum
in 2011 has been held in Istanbul: IAI contributed to a special issue (Spring 2011) of the journal
dedicated to Italy-Turkey relations.
In 2010 for the seventh Forum,
IAI produced, together with the Global Relations Forum (GRF), a report
that identified methods and tools to promote technological cooperation between Italy and Turkey.
IAI also provided scientific support for the preparation of the final report of the
sixth (2009) Forum,
held in Istanbul on 18-19 novembre. The document
to which IAI contributed, addressed the role of women and multiculturalism in the two countries.
